Barbie’s Soundtrack Shatters Records, Dominating Charts

Barbie: The Album, the soundtrack for the Greta Gerwig-directed comedy based on the iconic Mattel doll, has achieved a remarkable feat by having three songs in the top five simultaneously. Billie Eilish’s introspective track “What Was I Made For?” has reached number three, followed by Dua Lipa’s infectious tune “Dance The Night” at number four. Rappers Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice have put a fresh spin on Aqua’s “Barbie World,” securing the fifth position on the charts.

Last year, the enchanted Colombian comedy Encanto became the first animated film soundtrack to have three songs in the top 10 simultaneously, with “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” “Surface Pressure,” and “The Family Madrigal.” The star-studded Barbie album also features Charli XCX’s high-energy track “Speed Drive,” Ryan Gosling’s melodramatic ballad “I’m Just Ken,” and Lizzo’s upbeat hit “Pink,” all of which have made it into the top 40. The movie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, was released in UK cinemas last week.

Meanwhile, rapper Dave and Central Cee’s hit “Sprinter” continues to dominate the charts for an impressive eighth week at number one, while Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire” holds steadfast at the second spot. Blur, the iconic Britpop group, has secured their seventh UK number one album with “The Ballad Of Darren” following their recent performances at Wembley Stadium. Not only did they top the Official Vinyl Albums Chart, but their album also became the most purchased record in independent record shops across the UK this week. This achievement puts Blur on par with esteemed artists such as Sir Elton John, George Michael, Sir Paul McCartney, and Barbra Streisand, all of whom have also had an equal number of chart-topping albums. The Beatles still hold the record for the most number one albums, with an impressive 15 chart-toppers.

Other notable albums on the charts this week include Taylor Swift’s “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version),” The Weeknd’s “The Highlights,” rapper J Hus’s “Beautiful And Brutal Yard,” and Sir Elton John’s “Diamonds.” Additionally, Malakai Bayoh, a talented teenage singer and finalist on Britain’s Got Talent, has seen his debut album “Golden” reach the top spot on the Official Classical Artist Albums Chart. Expressing his joy, Bayoh said, “I can’t believe I have a number one album. It was such a fun record to make. Thank you to everyone who purchased it, especially now that the school holidays have begun.”

In a surprising turn of events, Norwegian comedian Viggo Venn was crowned the winner of the talent competition in 2023.
