Barbie Surpasses Grease and Full Monty in Its Climb Up the All-Time Box Office Chart

Barbie, featuring the talented duo of Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, has achieved an impressive feat by surpassing several beloved blockbusters at the UK and Ireland box office. The enchanting comedy, starring Margot Robbie as the iconic Mattel fashion doll, has amassed a staggering £89.1 million in just six weeks since its release. This places it just outside the prestigious top 20 highest-earning films of all time, and its ascent shows no signs of slowing.

Barbie’s triumph over other iconic films at the box office is truly remarkable. It has already left behind classics such as E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Toy Story 2, and The Spy Who Loved Me. Furthermore, it has now outshone Daniel Craig’s inaugural appearance as James Bond in Casino Royale, as well as Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets. Not to mention leaving behind the unforgettable hits Grease and The Full Monty.

The British Film Institute (BFI) has provided these awe-inspiring figures, taking into account adjusted box office takings for all films released since 1975. Though Barbie experienced a 28% decline in earnings between its fifth and sixth weekends, its momentum is expected to carry it even higher in the coming weeks.

With its current trajectory, Barbie is poised to surpass 2008’s Mamma Mia! (£89.2 million) and secure a spot in the prestigious all-time top 20. However, to make it into the top 15, it would need to generate a minimum of £96.2 million. If Barbie wants to crack the top 10, it would need to earn at least £105.9 million, surpassing the record set by Jaws in 1975 (£105.8 million).

It’s worth noting that the highest-grossing film of all time in the UK and Ireland, when adjusted for inflation, is 1998’s Titanic, which has accumulated an astounding £153.4 million.

Let us not forget that box office data for the UK and Ireland is considered together for reporting purposes.
