‘Barbie’ Scenes Were Influenced by Greta Gerwig’s Catholic Upbringing, Says the Director

  • Greta Gerwig attributes her Catholic upbringing to influencing her creative approach in making the “Barbie” movie.
  • In an interview with AP News, the filmmaker discussed her affinity for “older story forms” due to attending Catholic school.
  • This is not the first time Gerwig or the “Barbie” cast has mentioned the religious references in the film.

Greta Gerwig’s Catholic upbringing greatly influenced her approach to creating the “Barbie” film, evident in certain scenes.

During an interview with AP News, Gerwig drew parallels between Biblical stories and the movie’s setting.

“In the movie, when it begins, the protagonist exists in a world free from aging, death, pain, shame, and self-consciousness. Then, suddenly, she becomes self-conscious. It’s a story with deep roots,” Gerwig explained. “And we are familiar with that story.”

Gerwig acknowledges that her Catholic upbringing inclines her towards relying on these “older story forms.”

“I consistently gravitate towards those entrenched story forms because of my experience in Catholic school and my connection to them,” she added.

Greta Gerwig attended St. Francis Catholic High School, an all-female school in Sacramento, California. Her alumna profile can be found on the school’s webpage.

This is not the first instance where Gerwig or the cast of “Barbie” have spoken about the film’s religious references.

In one scene of the movie, Barbie encounters Ruth Handler, the doll’s inventor, in a manner reminiscent of a famous religious artwork, as Gerwig mentioned in an interview with USA Today.

“There’s a shot where Ruth hands Barbie a cup of tea, and the composition mirrors the touch between God and Adam in the Sistine Chapel,” Gerwig explained.

In a Vogue interview published in May, Gerwig also drew parallels between the creation of Barbie and the creation myth in the Bible.

“Barbie was invented first,” Gerwig told Vogue. “Ken was then created to enhance Barbie’s position in our perception and in the world. This creation myth stands in contrast to the Genesis creation myth.”

During the same interview, Margot Robbie, who portrays the film’s protagonist, mentioned that Gerwig even composed an abstract poem about Barbie, resembling the Apostles Creed, to set the film’s tone.
