Barbie Nears Top 10 List of Highest-Grossing Films in the U.S. – Surpasses “The Avengers” at #11

Over the weekend, “Barbie” earned an impressive $4 million at the box office, even though it has been in theaters for nearly two months. This brings its domestic gross to an astounding $626 million, surpassing “The Avengers” and claiming the 11th spot on the highest-grossing films list in the U.S. It is now on the verge of breaking into the top 10. According to Box Office Mojo, “Barbie” beat “The Avengers” by $2,764,233, pushing it down to 12th place. To reach the 10th spot, the film needs to make an additional $27.28 million and surpass “Jurassic World.”

The highest-grossing film domestically is “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens” from 2015, which has earned an impressive $936 million in the U.S. When considering worldwide sales, “Avatar” from 2009 takes the top spot with $2.9 billion in lifetime gross. “Barbie” currently holds the 14th spot on the worldwide list, having made $1.4 billion so far.

What sets “Barbie” apart from the other highest-grossing films is its unique genre. While most of the top films are superhero or fantasy movies, “Barbie” stands out as a pink-drenched comedy with a heartwarming message about women empowerment. Interestingly, all of the top 20 films on the highest-grossing list domestically are directed by men, except “Barbie.” This makes it the highest-grossing film directed by a woman ever. “Frozen II,” directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, is the second-highest-grossing film directed by a woman, ranking at No. 22 on the list with a domestic gross of $477 million.

“Barbie” held the top spot at the weekend box office for four weeks after its premiere on July 21. It has consistently remained on the charts, only briefly slipping to No. 2 when new movies like “The Nun II” and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” debuted. As it climbed the box office ranks, “Barbie” made history by becoming Warner Bros. Discovery’s highest-grossing film, surpassing the domestic gross of “The Dark Knight” from 2008.

The star-studded film features Margot Robbie as the blonde, ambitious Barbie, Ryan Gosling as one of the Ken dolls, and America Ferrera as a Mattel employee who Barbie meets in the real world. Other notable actors include Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, and Will Ferrell as the head of Mattel. The movie’s popularity even sparked a trend of “Barbie core,” leading to a surge in pink clothing and accessories. In fact, there was a shortage of pink paint from the brand Rosco due to the overwhelming demand.

The success of “Barbie” extends beyond the box office. The film’s soundtrack, titled “Barbie: The Album” and produced by Mark Ronson, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. It has been on the chart for seven weeks and currently sits at No. 7. Overall, “Barbie” has made a significant impact on both the film industry and popular culture.
