Barbie Banned in Algeria, Becoming the Latest Country to Make the Move

Algeria has recently imposed a ban on the Barbie movie due to concerns about its impact on morals. Interestingly, the film had already been released in the country three weeks ago and has been a huge success, with sold-out screenings in cities like Algiers, Oran, and Constantine. Reports suggest that the ban was imposed by Algeria’s culture ministry, citing the movie’s alleged promotion of homosexuality and other Western values that are deemed incompatible with the country’s religious and cultural beliefs.

This ban echoes similar actions taken by other Middle Eastern countries, including Kuwait. Lebanon’s culture minister called for a ban, arguing that the movie promotes homosexuality and transsexuality while also undermining traditional family structures and the role of parents. Although Lebanon’s censorship committee did not immediately ban the film, it is still under review.

However, in Saudi Arabia, where movie theaters were only recently allowed, the Barbie movie was released last Thursday and has been a resounding success. Movie theaters have been screening the film up to 15 times per day, defying expectations of a potential ban or heavy censorship. The film was also released in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates on the same day. Interestingly, some Kuwaitis expressed surprise at having to travel to Saudi Arabia, which is often considered more conservative, to see the movie.

It’s worth noting that Vietnam has also banned the Barbie movie, although their reasons differ from those of the Middle Eastern countries. Vietnam’s ban was apparently due to a depiction of a map.

Overall, the Barbie movie seems to be generating a mix of controversy and anticipation around the world, with each country responding to it based on its cultural and religious beliefs.
