In a stunning turn of events, Daniel Noboa, an inexperienced politician and heir to a fortune built on the banana trade, emerged victorious in Ecuador’s presidential runoff election on Sunday. Despite the unprecedented violence that marred the election, even claiming the life of a candidate, Noboa managed to secure 52.2% of the votes, outperforming his opponent Luisa González, a leftist lawyer and ally of exiled former President Rafael Correa, who received 47.8% of the votes. González graciously conceded defeat during a speech to her supporters and expressed her intention to congratulate Noboa. The 35-year-old Noboa will now lead Ecuador during a period of escalating violence, prompting Ecuadorians to demand increased safety measures.
Building his political career in 2021, Noboa earned a seat in the National Assembly where he chaired its Economic Development Commission. In addition to his political achievements, Noboa has a successful business background. He started his own event organizing company at the age of 18 and later joined his father’s Noboa Corp., gaining experience in various management positions related to shipping, logistics, and commerce. Noboa’s father, Álvaro Noboa, is the wealthiest individual in Ecuador, thanks to his extensive business empire that originated in the banana industry—the country’s primary crop. With over 128 companies spread across multiple countries, the elder Noboa attempted to run for president five times but was unsuccessful. However, Daniel Noboa now has the opportunity to fulfill his father’s ambitions, as his term will run through May 2025, filling the remaining tenure of President Guillermo Lasso, who shortened his term after dissolving the National Assembly due to impeachment proceedings over alleged improprieties in a contract involving a state-owned company.
