Authorities are currently on the lookout for Jason Dean Billingsley, a convicted sex offender who is now facing murder charges in the tragic killing of Pava LaPere, a prominent tech CEO in Baltimore.
Billingsley, 32, was recently released on parole after serving a 30-year prison sentence for a sex crime. He is now wanted for first-degree murder in connection with LaPere’s death, which occurred at her apartment building. The police made this announcement during a press conference held on Tuesday evening.
During the press conference, acting Police Commissioner Richard Worley urged residents to remain vigilant, emphasizing the dangerous nature of the suspect. He stated, “This individual will kill and he will rape. He will do anything he can to cause harm.”
Authorities have revealed that Billingsley is likely armed and is also wanted on charges of assault and reckless endangerment. However, they have not disclosed how they linked him to LaPere’s murder.
LaPere, aged 26, was an accomplished entrepreneur who founded the data-curating startup EcoMap Technologies in Baltimore after her studies at Johns Hopkins University.
She was discovered dead on Monday morning, with police noting signs of blunt-force trauma to her head.
Worley stated that LaPere was found “within hours” of being reported missing. He added that there appears to be no personal connection between Billingsley and LaPere, and the apartment building where the murder occurred was considered secure.
“Someone had allowed the individual into the building,” Worley revealed.
LaPere’s company, which had approximately 30 employees, was located on the lower floor of the same apartment building.
According to reports from The Baltimore Banner, Billingsley pleaded guilty to multiple assault charges in the past, including a first-degree sex offense. Despite being sentenced to 30 years in prison, he was released on parole in October 2022 due to good behavior.
Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, speaking at the press conference, expressed frustration over Billingsley’s release and said that he should never have been allowed back on the streets. He stated, “We are tired of talking about the same people committing the same kind of crimes over and over again.”
