In December of last year, my wife and I decided to visit our son in Virginia. Unfortunately, my wife fell ill with stomach cramps and diarrhea, and we had to take her to a local hospital. She was diagnosed with colitis and received medication, which made her even more unwell. She became dehydrated and had to stay overnight in the hospital. The total cost of her tests and treatment was $24,603.

Thankfully, we had travel insurance through our Lloyds bank account provided by Allianz, so we contacted them immediately to make the claim. However, it has now been nearly six months, and the hospital invoice still has not been paid. Allianz confirmed that they received all the necessary documentation and invoices, yet they were unable to offer an explanation for the non-payment and gave no forecast of when payment might be made. Meanwhile, the hospital and US-based collection agencies are threatening my wife and son with debt collection.

At our age, my wife being 79 and me being 83, we feel frightened and powerless in this situation. However, it is fortunate that my wife fell ill and not me, as we discovered that the policy only covers passengers up to age 80. Unfortunately, other policies are too expensive, so we had to travel uninsured.

I reached out to Allianz, and they assured me that negotiations were underway between them and the hospital. However, it is clear to me that Allianz or one of its agencies has messed up by failing to take up the claim in a timely manner. After repeated questioning, Allianz failed to provide a coherent answer as to why it took so long to address the claim.

The stress that Allianz has put us through is unacceptable. As a result, I believe that we should receive compensation. I will continue to monitor the situation until Allianz pays the hospital bill. Only then can my wife and I breathe a sigh of relief again. Despite this mishap, I hope that we will be able to visit our son again in the future.
