B.C. Premier Urges Enhanced Federal Transparency on Indian Foreign Interference for Improved Accountability

British Columbia Premier David Eby strongly suspects that the federal government is withholding information that could help protect residents with connections to India.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed a potential link between the Indian government and the fatal shooting of Sikh advocate Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C., last June. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc has reached out, stating that Ottawa wants to ensure the provincial government has the necessary details to keep B.C. residents safe. However, the premier believes there has been a lack of information sharing.

In response to the killing, Premier Eby emphasized the importance of holding those responsible criminally accountable.

Eby believes that people in B.C. are feeling pressure from India, and he suspects that Ottawa has information through federal agencies, such as the RCMP and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, that could aid in responding to foreign interference. The premier is calling on Ottawa to share all relevant information, not only regarding foreign interference but also transnational organized crime threats in the province.

Eby has accepted Trudeau’s offer for a briefing by CSIS but states that everything he knows about the situation is already in the public realm.

“I expressed my frustration in the meeting with the CSIS director about our inability to get more concrete information,” Eby said.

Eby acknowledges that there may need to be reform around the law governing CSIS in order for the agency to share the kind of information he is seeking.

“If that’s what’s required, let’s make it happen because the only way that we’re going to make traction on this is by the federal government trusting the provincial government with information and being able to act on it in our local communities,” Eby said.
