Avoid This One Mistake: Correctly Using Nasal Sprays

Are you struggling with seasonal allergies, sinus infections, or a cold? If so, you’re probably using a nasal spray incorrectly. According to Dr. M. Waseem Imam, a Texas-based allergist, most people make the mistake of spraying upwards instead of directing the spray towards the sinus cavities. In his viral TikTok video, which has garnered over 2 million views, Dr. Imam explains the correct technique: tilt your head down, insert the spray, tilt it slightly, and twist it out to ensure the spray reaches the sinuses. This method prevents concentration of the spray in one area and reduces the risk of nosebleeds.

Dr. Purvi Parikh, an allergist with Allergy & Asthma Network, supports Dr. Imam’s instructions. She emphasizes the importance of not aiming towards the middle of the nose, as it can cause irritation and nosebleeds. Instead, she suggests pointing the nozzle outwards towards the sinuses or using the opposite hand to spray the opposite nostril.

Dr. Imam also dispels the misconception that all nasal sprays are the same addictive drug. Saline sprays moisturize the nose, decongestant sprays like Afrin close off blood vessels, and antihistamine and steroid sprays serve different purposes. For seasonal allergies, Dr. Imam advises using a steroid nasal spray first, followed by an azelastine nasal spray if necessary. Afrin sprays are only recommended for acute colds, not seasonal allergies.

By adjusting your nasal spray technique, you can greatly improve your nasal congestion symptoms. Remember to tilt your head down, aim towards the sinuses, and your sinuses will thank you.
