After 25 years in operation, Netflix has made the decision to close down its DVD-by-mail rental service. According to Business Insider, Netflix has announced that customers can keep the DVDs from their final shipments and will not be charged for them. The last DVD will be mailed to subscribers on September 29. In addition, subscribers can enter for a chance to receive 10 mystery DVDs after the service is terminated.
Netflix’s DVD department addressed the news in a tweet, referring to it as “a happy clarification in response to all the news headlines out there.” They assured customers that they will not be charged for any unreturned discs after September 29, and encouraged them to enjoy their final shipments for as long as they desire. The Netflix DVD feed on X, the platform previously known as Twitter, is abuzz with subscribers sharing their efforts to #GetThroughMyQueue before DVD shipments cease.
Based on the responses to Netflix DVD’s tweet about the final shipments, it appears to not be too late for users to sign up for a Netflix DVD subscription and receive free DVDs. One commenter even joked, “Watch as Netflix DVD subscriptions spike by a billion percent so that people can get cheap movies.” However, the top-tier plan, which permits three DVDs at a time, will cost $19.99 for the first and last month of service.
