Motorists have been cautioned that they may be violating driving laws by tampering with traffic smartphone apps while driving.
Experts at Road Angel have issued a warning that motorists could face consequences for even touching their phone, even if it is secured in a cradle, due to the introduction of stricter laws.
Recent measures have made it illegal for drivers to use their mobile phones in any circumstances.
This includes simply touching the screen to input a location into driving apps like Google Maps.
Some navigation apps also prompt drivers to touch the screen multiple times to report issues such as congestion, potholes, and accidents.
This data is collected to redirect other drivers away from incidents in order to expedite travel times. However, assisting other motorists could lead to fines and penalty points.
Gary Digva, spokesperson for Road Angel, acknowledged that it is “never acceptable” to use a phone while driving.
He stated, “Despite the law being tightened over a year ago, there is still some confusion surrounding the use of phones while driving.
“It is important for drivers to understand what they can and cannot do when using popular driving apps that encourage real-time user interaction.
“Most GPS systems are updated in real-time, gathering information on speed limits and police locations without user interaction being necessary.
“Using devices while driving has been proven to cause serious accidents, with nearly 500 people injured in incidents where the driver was using their phone. It is time to send a clear message to motorists that this is never acceptable.
“Using your phone while driving can result not only in hefty fines and penalty points but also puts many people in danger. That is why it is crucial to ensure you have the proper setup and equipment for a safe journey, regardless of your destination.”
According to GOV.UK, drivers caught using their mobiles will face a £200 fine and six penalty points on their license.
In severe cases, drivers may be summoned to court where they could receive a higher fine of £1,000.
If driving a bus or a lorry, the fine can reach £2,500, and drivers may potentially face a driving ban in certain situations.
