June 13 (UPI) — An autopsy report from the Orange County, Fla., Medical Examiner’s Office revealed that U.S. sprinter Tori Bowie, a three-time Olympic medalist, died from complications of childbirth.
The report, released on Monday night, disclosed that Bowie, 32, was found dead on May 2 in her Orange County home. At the time of her death, she was approximately 8 months pregnant and evidence indicated that she was in labor with a “well-developed fetus.”
The autopsy report identified respiratory distress and eclampsia as potential complications of the childbirth. Toxicology results for Bowie were negative.
In a separate autopsy of the baby, it was determined that the female child was stillborn due to Bowie’s condition.
Bowie’s death was ruled as “natural” and was announced on May 3. After a wellness check, Orange County sheriff’s deputies discovered Bowie’s body when she hadn’t been heard from for several days.
Bowie, originally from Sand Hill, Mississippi, attended the University of Southern Mississippi and turned professional in 2013. In addition to sprinting events, she competed in the long jump.
At the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Bowie was part of the gold medal-winning 4×100-meter relay team. She also won a silver and a bronze medal in the respective 100- and 200-meter events at the same Olympics.
In the 2017 World Championships, Bowie won gold in the 100-meter and 4×100-meter races. She finished third in the 100-meter race at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing.
Bowie’s funeral took place on May 13 at the True Vine Baptist Church in Brandon, Miss., and she was laid to rest in Sandhill.
An obituary for Bowie mentioned that she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Ariana Bowie.
The obituary further revealed that Bowie was volunteering at Eve’s House, a transitional home for women re-entering society after incarceration, as part of her social work degree program at the University of Southern Mississippi.
In addition to her studies in social work, Bowie also pursued music at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Fla., until her passing.
