Automotive industry veteran takes on Rep. Mike Levin in highly anticipated CA-49 race

Sheryl Adams, a former business executive and entrepreneur, is vying to unseat three-term incumbent Mike Levin in California’s 49th congressional district.

Adams, a resident of Del Mar, has an impressive background in executive and managerial roles at prominent automotive companies like Ford Motor Company, Hyundai, and General Motors. On July 11, she officially declared her candidacy, making her the second Republican challenger in the race.

“California needs an experienced businesswoman who can provide tangible solutions to get our country back on the right track,” Adams stated. “As I observe the state of affairs in Washington, I see that career politicians from both parties have implemented policies resulting in skyrocketing inflation, increased energy costs, and soaring healthcare expenses.”

California’s 49th district is among the 37 seats held by Democrats that the Republican campaign arm, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), identifies as a prime target for Republicans in their pursuit of expanding their majority in the House. In the previous election, Levin’s Republican challenger, Brian Maryott, received over 47% of the vote.

The coastal district, encompassing Orange and San Diego counties, stretches from Dana Point and San Clemente to Solana Beach and Del Mar.

If elected, Adams aims to address economic issues such as inflation and the increasing cost of living.

“My primary focus is combating socialist policies that drive up inflation, making it challenging for families to make ends meet. These policies also harm small businesses and force companies to leave California,” she emphasized. “Should I be elected, my commitment is to reduce taxes for families, seniors, young adults, and small businesses. I will vehemently oppose any attempts to raise the federal gas tax and work towards restoring critical state and local tax deductions as well as mortgage interest deductions.”

Adams is also prioritizing the issue of crime and proposes providing law enforcement with additional funding and resources to combat criminal activity.

“Crime is no longer a distant concern; it is gradually encroaching upon our communities,” Adams said. “In my neighborhood, it has become a prevalent concern for everyone.”

Adams proudly boasts the endorsement of long-term Representative Darrell Issa, a Republican who formerly represented the district for multiple terms. Issa did not seek reelection in 2018, leading to Levin’s victory. However, Issa successfully ran for the 50th congressional district in 2020, and in 2022, he secured reelection in the newly redistricted 48th congressional district.

“With her extensive experience in business and community advocacy, Sheryl brings a fresh perspective and innovative solutions to the table. She understands the challenges facing our region and possesses the vision to transform these challenges into opportunities for progress,” Issa conveyed in a statement. “She is the only candidate capable of defeating Democrat Mike Levin, a staunch supporter of left-wing policies that threaten both our district and our nation.”

Adams thoroughly contemplated and purposefully made the decision to run, intending to allocate the next decade or so to public service.

“Working in the highly competitive automotive industry, particularly at large companies, requires adeptness and finesse,” Adams explained. “Throughout my career, I have gained experience handling intricate transactions and negotiations. These skills closely align with what is necessary in Washington – bringing all stakeholders to the table to establish mutually beneficial solutions.”

Another Republican candidate in the race, Matt Gunderson, has garnered numerous endorsements from prominent Republicans, including all three Republican members of the Assembly representing areas within the 49th district: Kate Sanchez, Diane Dixon, and Laurie Davies. He also has the backing of former State Senator Patricia Bates, former Representative Mimi Walters, and Lanhee Chen, who recently launched a PAC dedicated to promoting solutions-oriented Republicans running for office.

“With his experience running a business in Orange County and his commitment to rectifying America’s faltering economy and curbing inflation, Matt Gunderson is the candidate who will defeat Mike Levin,” stated spokesperson Brian Pepin.

Levin responded, saying, “The upcoming Congressional elections will be fierce, and we are prepared to take on any candidate who emerges from the primary.”
