Authorities: Man Pretends to be Veterinarian, Performs Surgery on Pregnant Dog Resulting in Death

In Naples, Florida, a man was apprehended on Friday for pretending to be a veterinarian and conducting surgery on a pregnant dog, leading to the dog’s death due to complications. According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, the individual possessed a pet grooming license but was not licensed as a veterinarian.

The suspect, a 61-year-old resident of Collier County, has been charged with animal abuse and practicing veterinary medicine without the necessary credentials. The incident involved a 6-year-old Chihuahua named Sugar, whose owners sought the supposed veterinarian’s assistance when the dog encountered difficulties during the delivery of her puppies. The sheriff’s office reported that the suspect arrived at the owners’ residence and performed a cesarean section on Sugar in a converted ambulance. One stillborn puppy was removed, and the suspect invoiced the owners $600 for the procedure.

Tragically, Sugar developed an infection a week later, prompting her owners to rush her to an emergency pet hospital. The medical staff discovered that the incision had been closed using string or thread instead of proper suture material, which likely contributed to the infection. Sugar passed away a few hours later.

The sheriff’s office highlighted that a qualified veterinarian typically performs C-section surgeries on pregnant dogs and stated that had this been the case for Sugar, she would likely have survived.

The Collier County court clerk’s office had not yet recorded the suspect’s case in its electronic docket, so the availability of his attorney for comments remains uncertain.
