FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried made a jaw-dropping deal with legendary quarterback Tom Brady to promote his crypto exchange, as revealed in the book “Going Infinite” by Michael Lewis. The author, who had access to internal documents, shared this fascinating detail on Sunday’s episode of “60 Minutes.”
According to Lewis, “He paid Tom Brady $55 million for 20 hours a year for three years. He paid Steph Curry $35 million for the same thing for three years.”
However, Brady’s involvement with Bankman-Fried went beyond making commercials and being a brand ambassador. Lewis suggested that Brady genuinely admired the entrepreneur and enjoyed their conversations.
Lewis further explained, “And [Bankman-Fried] really liked Tom Brady. Sam wasn’t a big sports person, so it was interesting to see their interaction. It was like, ‘These two people actually get along.’ It’s like the class nerd and the quarterback.”
After retiring from the NFL in 2022, Brady and his ex-wife Gisele Bündchen reportedly suffered losses of $48 million in shares of the crypto exchange, as reported by The New York Times.
They, along with other celebrities, faced a lawsuit for aggressively promoting FTX, which ended up costing investors billions, according to CBS News.
Bankman-Fried is now facing charges including wire fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes related to bilking investors out of billions. His company, once valued at $32 billion, collapsed in 2022.
