Author Discovers Artificial Intelligence is Selling Counterfeit Products Using Her Name

The advent of easy self-publishing has been a boon for some independent authors, but it has also brought about a new set of challenges. Author Jane Friedman recently discovered that there were several books on Amazon under her name that she didn’t write. These books turned out to be AI-generated, with someone using her name as a means to make a quick profit. After initially refusing Friedman’s request, Amazon has now removed the fake books from the platform. However, Friedman remains concerned about the lack of safeguards in place.

Friedman expressed her frustration, stating that if someone can profit from simply using her name and publishing low-quality content, it demonstrates a lack of protection. Amazon only took action after a public outcry following Friedman’s revelation. In her newsletter, Friedman even stated that she would prefer her actual books to be “pirated” rather than having her name associated with subpar literature. The fake books using her name were even added to her official Goodreads profile. This issue is not exclusive to established authors, as scammers are also flooding the travel and guidebook market with AI-authored fakes.

Vice reported on how AI bots have inundated Amazon’s best-seller lists with nonsensical AI-generated books, causing serious disruption for indie writers. While Amazon is working on addressing this issue, Insider reports that the company still needs to tackle the problem of AI-generated reviews cluttering the site. Despite the challenges, Amazon is striving to protect the work of human authors from AI fakery.
