In her newsletter, Friedman even stated that she would prefer her actual books to be “pirated” rather than having her name associated with subpar literature. The fake books using her name were even added to her official Goodreads profile. This issue is not exclusive to established authors, as scammers are also flooding the travel and guidebook market with AI-authored fakes.
Vice reported on how AI bots have inundated Amazon’s best-seller lists with nonsensical AI-generated books, causing serious disruption for indie writers. While Amazon is working on addressing this issue, Insider reports that the company still needs to tackle the problem of AI-generated reviews cluttering the site. Despite the challenges, Amazon is striving to protect the work of human authors from AI fakery.
