Australian Technical Advisory Group suggests COVID-19 booster shot for individuals aged 75 and above

Australian Technical Advisory Group Recommends COVID-19 Booster for Individuals Over 75

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has recommended that the most vulnerable Australians schedule a Covid-19 vaccination booster shot.

According to the fresh recommendations released by ATAGI on Friday, all adults over the age of 75 should receive an additional Covid-19 vaccine dose in 2023 if it has been six months since their last dose.

This means that individuals aged 75 or older, who are up-to-date with their Covid vaccinations, would be receiving their sixth shot – the initial vaccine dose, plus five boosters thereafter.

ATAGI also advises individuals aged 65 to 74, adults with severe immune compromise, and those residing in aged care facilities to consider receiving an additional Covid booster.

‘ATAGI continues to encourage all adults who were recommended to have a Covid-19 vaccine dose in February 2023, and have not yet received one, to get vaccinated as soon as possible,’ states the recommendation.

‘For younger individuals or older adults without severe immunocompromise who have already received a dose in 2023, no further doses are currently recommended.’

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler has also urged individuals who have fallen behind on their booster shots to get vaccinated.
