Susie O’Neill, once hailed as the queen of the pool in the 1990s, has proven that her swimming prowess is still intact. In her first competitive swim since the Sydney 2000 Olympic games, O’Neill celebrated her 50th birthday by breaking a world record at the World Aquatics Masters Championships in Japan.
The previous 50m butterfly world record of 29.27, set by multiple FINA Masters Swimming world record holder Erika Braun, was surpassed by O’Neill with a time of 29.08 in the 50-54 age bracket. Her impressive performance outmatched Great Britain’s Michelle Ware.
O’Neill was Australia’s Deputy Chef de Mission at the Tokyo Olympics and has now returned to the pool in emphatic fashion, breaking the 50-54 world record in the 50m butterfly
