August Air Travel Boom: Ontario Airport Witnesses a Surge in Passenger Numbers

Ontario International Airport Sees 11% Increase in Passengers in August

During the month of August, Ontario International Airport experienced a surge in passenger traffic, with over 567,000 travelers passing through. The airport, a popular choice for Southland travelers, witnessed an impressive 11% jump compared to the same period in the previous year. This boost in numbers comprised of 527,000 domestic fliers, indicating a noteworthy 6% increase from August 2022. Additionally, the airport recorded a three-fold increase in international travelers, as 40,000 passengers opted to embark on their journeys through Ontario International Airport. Interestingly, this is only the second time in history that the airport has seen such a large number of international travelers, the first instance occurring in July when 43,000 people chose this airport for their travels.

Ontario International Airport Authority’s CEO, Atif Elkadi, expressed satisfaction with these statistics and highlighted the airport’s consistent growth throughout the year. Elkadi stated, “Demand for air travel through Ontario International remained strong in August and for the year, outpacing growth at other California airports. Our excellent facilities, services, and amenities have instilled consumer confidence in us, enabling us to fulfill our mission of providing a world-class international gateway for Southern California.”

Notably, this year has seen a cumulative increase of 12% as more than 4 million passengers have passed through Ontario Airport in the first eight months. The number of domestic passengers has risen by 8.7% during this period, while the count of international travelers has more than doubled. Despite these positive trends, commercial cargo shipments showed a decline of 12.9% in August compared to the same month last year. Furthermore, overall cargo volume has decreased by 11.6% in the first eight months of this year. Airport officials attribute this decline to the impact of “global economic issues,” which have affected cargo traffic nationwide.
