If you haven’t had the chance to watch some of the most popular movies of the summer, now is the perfect time to do so.

Sunday marks the second annual National Cinema Day. More than 3,000 participating theaters nationwide are offering movie tickets for just $4. This is the lowest average ticket price since 1989, based on data from the National Association of Theatre Owners. Last year, the average ticket price was $10.53.

Movie theaters have been working hard to recover from the impact of the pandemic. Summer hits like “Barbie” have helped increase sales, with AMC witnessing its highest quarterly attendance since 2019. However, AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc, the theater chain, is still facing significant debt, and the ongoing strike by Hollywood actors and writers has disrupted film production. National Cinema Day could provide a much-needed boost to the theater industry.

Last year’s Cinema Day, when tickets were priced at $3, attracted 8 million participants and generated $23.8 million at the box office, experiencing a 103% increase compared to the previous day.

According to the Cinema Foundation, the non-profit organization leading this initiative, Cinema Day has had a lasting effect on theater attendance. In a report published earlier this year, the foundation discovered that almost 60% of surveyed attendees reported watching movies more frequently after National Cinema Day.

The top five movies capturing audiences’ attention this year are “Blue Beetle,” “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” and “Strays.”

“Blue Beetle” and “Barbie” are distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN’s parent company.
