Requiring Rudy Giuliani to undergo a mugshot was not only disrespectful to him but also to the entire justice system. It would have been more appropriate for the Georgia district attorney to exercise discretion and tact considering Giuliani’s significant achievements. However, it seems that the district attorney lacks the professional courtesy that most of her peers possess, with the exception of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. It’s worth noting that these individuals have yet to achieve even a fraction of the success that Giuliani has accomplished throughout his career. If every current mayor of major American cities followed Giuliani’s exemplary management of New York City, our country would undoubtedly be a much better place to live.

The establishment of the Flatbush Cats clinic in Brooklyn is undoubtedly a great help to the local community. However, it raises the question of why City Councilmember Justin Brannan took so long to address this crucial issue of the homeless-animal crisis. Brannan has held his position for six years without doing much or anything to tackle this problem throughout the entire city. Instead, the city should have followed the lead of the new veterinary clinic. The ASPCA abandoned the animal control contract to the city back in 1994, and since then, the city has consistently demonstrated inadequate management, resulting in a lack of care and attention to the issue. It’s time for action, not just empty promises. Now that Brannan has spoken out, it is his responsibility to introduce a bill that mandates the city to fund affordable or free spay-and-neuter clinics and support “trap, neuter, and release” rescuers. These individuals are doing the government’s job and often end up in financial distress. It is crucial that Brannan gets this bill passed and signed into law; otherwise, we will continue to be a city that lags behind when it comes to animal welfare.

The recent editorial titled “Poster Boy for No Parole” provides valuable insight into the need for reform within New York’s Parole Board. If George Acosta is granted parole, it will serve as evidence that the Parole Board’s policies need to be reevaluated. Since 2017, the Parole Board has allowed 36 cop killers to be released, and this soft-on-crime approach is no longer sustainable for New York. Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams must take proactive measures to address this issue.

Columnist Stephanie Butnick’s claim that the makeup used on actor Bradley Cooper for the Leonard Bernstein biopic caused no trouble is disproven by the attached photo. Cooper’s natural nose and hair actually bear a closer resemblance to Bernstein than the prosthetic makeup he was wearing. The decision to alter Bernstein’s appearance to make him look less attractive and “more Jewish” can only be seen as perpetuating stereotypes. Perhaps the producers believed that their artificial look would be more marketable or convey their intended message, but it is important to challenge and question such decisions that reinforce harmful stereotypes.

While it may seem remarkable that the city is cracking down on vendors of counterfeit goods, it raises concerns when there are abundant community complaints in Brooklyn that are left unaddressed. The prevalence of turnstile jumpers and homeless individuals roaming the streets is costing the city millions and affecting its overall well-being. It is disheartening to witness the decline of our city due to a lack of attention to these pressing issues.
