Aug. 30, 2023: Letters to the Editor

The Concern:

A recent poll reveals that 53% of New Yorkers are dissatisfied with the current direction of the state, with 40% even contemplating leaving. It’s clear that over half of the population believes that New York is heading in the wrong direction, earning it the not-so-flattering nickname “New Yuck State.” This is a result of continually electing Democratic mayors, a Democratic Assembly that obstructs progress, and a Democratic governor who is influenced by her donors. The act of repeatedly voting for candidates with a “D” next to their name while expecting different outcomes can only be described as insanity. It’s time for a change.

The Failures of Leadership:

The leadership in both the city and state of New York has proven to be ineffective and oblivious to the concerns of its citizens. Instead of addressing the crumbling tax base and working to retain New Yorkers, they seem to encourage their departure. They have also mishandled the migrant crisis, exacerbating an already dire situation. As if that wasn’t enough, the recent outbreak of the spotted lanternfly, both in the city and statewide, is yet another example of their incompetence. How can they claim to be leaders when those who still reside and pay taxes in New York find themselves trapped and abandoned, like passengers on a stalled subway train, desperately seeking information that never comes? Mayor Eric Adams may claim to be actively providing resources for migrants, but his actions fall short.

The Decline of a Once-Great State:

As someone who was born and raised in New York City and spent 25 years living in Manhattan, I have a deep love for this city. However, I can’t help but witness the decline of a state that once produced some of the most exceptional individuals in our country. The people of New York City and the state as a whole deserve the current situation they find themselves in. They had the opportunity to elect Curtis Sliwa, someone who knows the city inside out, as mayor, and a highly respected individual from Suffolk County as governor. Instead, they chose political hacks. The consequences of their choices are evident.

The Hope for Redemption:

I can only pray that someone will step up and save New York. The middle-class and wealthy citizens are fleeing to escape burdensome taxes, rising crime rates, deteriorating infrastructure, and an influx of illegal immigrants. Both the mayor and governor should have had the courage to address these issues and demand immediate action from the unfit president. Sadly, they are too afraid to stand up and do what is necessary. As a former New Yorker, along with countless others, I feel a deep sense of sadness for what has become of our home state.

The Reality of Hochul’s Leadership:

The approval rating of Governor Hochul has plummeted. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to those who voted for her that she has become a symbol of ineffective leadership. Crime is out of control, people are leaving the state, and her handling of the migrant crisis has been nothing short of absurd. She constantly criticizes Mayor Adams without offering any viable solutions. Hochul is a typical left-leaning politician who spouts politically correct rhetoric without actually having the capacity to solve problems. Unfortunately, this is precisely why she was elected.

The State of New York: Competence vs. Incompetence:

The issues in New York City and the state transcend partisan politics. It’s not about Democrats versus Republicans; it’s about competence versus incompetence. Even though I may not agree with former Rep. Liz Cheney on many matters, she hit the nail on the head when she recently said, “Our politicians are stupid.” I would go a step further and argue that they lack critical thinking skills when it comes to understanding the consequences of their policies, which has led to the current nightmare in our city. The situation calls for change.

An Appeal to Governor Hochul:

Governor, do you want to see more of the wealthy tax base fleeing to Florida? Well, it seems that the liberal voters who once supported you are turning against you, and rightfully so, as your approval rating continues to decline. Your decisions are putting the residents of New York at risk, including vulnerable children. It’s time to eliminate sanctuary-city status and recognize that the “right to shelter” should only apply to New York’s homeless citizens, not invaders.
