Baldwin’s Denial
Despite the agreement of numerous highly rated forensic weapons experts that Alec Baldwin, through pulling the trigger of a .45 caliber Colt revolver, caused the death of Halyna Hutchins, Baldwin adamantly denies any involvement (“Alec ‘triggered’ it,” Aug. 17).
It is an indisputable rule among gun handlers that when someone hands you a gun, regardless of the circumstances, you should assume it is loaded until proven otherwise.
If Baldwin had followed this rule, Halyna Hutchins would still be alive today. The responsibility lies with him.

Unjust Arrest
Tashawn Bernard, a mere 12 years old from Michigan, fell victim to racial profiling (“Bungling cops bust boy, 12,” Aug. 14).
The Lansing Police Department displayed a serious lack of thorough investigation before arresting Tashawn.
The officers should have asked for identification or, in the absence of ID, inquired about his whereabouts. This might have revealed that Tashawn was not the suspect they were looking for.
Furthermore, it has been reported that Tashawn was wearing a different colored shirt from the actual suspect. Such actions from the police only escalate tensions.
It is distressing that simply doing chores outside his home can turn into a stressful situation for a person of color.
Experiencing this at such a young age is problematic and should serve as a wake-up call for police officers across America. It is unacceptable and morally wrong.
Alim Howell, Philadelphia, Pa.

Sick of Fear
Enough is enough. We are now three years into the post-pandemic era, yet fear continues to dominate the media (“Going out to the game boosts ‘flu’ risk of going out on slab,” Aug. 13).
Middle-aged and elderly patients died alone in hospital rooms while their distraught family members looked on through glass. Children were denied access to schools, negatively impacting their education and emotional well-being.
Now a couple of economists claim a 25% increase in flu mortality is correlated with sports facilities. I would find this article amusing if I weren’t so infuriated.

Exorcism Lore
Contrary to Nat Segaloff’s statement in Caroline Howe’s article, it is not true that every Catholic parish has an exorcist (“50 Years of Fright,” PostScript, Books, Aug. 13).
This notion is quite absurd. From a practical perspective, it would mean that the majority of priests are exorcists, which is not the case.
While it is possible that larger dioceses may have individuals qualified to perform exorcisms, even that is uncertain.
Additionally, the claim that only Christians consider possession as evil is a gross oversimplification. It depends on the context. In ancient cultures, possession was often viewed as a positive or neutral event depending on the possessor’s identity.
The Vodun religion, for example, actively encourages possession in certain contexts. Thus, the assertion that possession is never seen as evil in other religions is incorrect.

Anti-Israel Bunk
The infiltration of antisemitic rhetoric in higher education persists (“‘Anti Israel’ Ivy U. furor,” Aug. 13).
The most recent example is Princeton University’s use of anti-Israel reading materials by a Rutgers University professor.
Imagine the media outcry if Princeton offered an anti-Islamic book.
