The Problem: Insufficient assistance from the White House as the migrant crisis worsens in New York City. Mayor Adams recently met with White House aide Tom Perez, but it seems that this was merely a symbolic meeting with no expectation of aid from President Biden. This lack of action is frustrating, and it seems that the Democrats are banking on providing federal funds just before the election in order to secure votes, regardless of the Republican candidate. However, the citizens of this country are fed up with the Democratic Party, and they should be prepared for a rude awakening. Kim Cody, Whitestone

As someone who has personally commuted and worked in New York City for many years, I have a personal stake in this issue. Mayor Adams is simply pandering to the political agenda and has previously championed New York City as a sanctuary city while criticizing Governors Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis. Now, he finds himself groveling before the president, who seems uninterested in assisting. It would show some leadership if Mayor Adams prioritized the needs of New York City’s children and worked to make our streets safer, rather than focusing on illegal immigrants. President Joe Biden must stop spending excessive time in nightclubs and actually fulfill his responsibilities. Lee Fleischman, Stamford, Conn.

In the midst of this migrant crisis, Mayor Adams has failed in his primary responsibility of ensuring the safety and sustainability of the city. All he does is draw attention to the growing number of illegal immigrants and the financial burden they bring. He calls for more shelters and more money from Washington and Albany. But why would the flow of illegal immigrants stop when New York City provides free accommodation and other benefits? The mayor claims to be powerless to stop this, but I disagree. He has the power to close the doors, refuse housing, turn back buses, and revoke the city’s sanctuary status. It’s time for him to take action. Without decisive measures, we can expect “temporary shelters” to pop up in our neighborhoods soon. Mark Seitelman, Manhattan

Firstly, I want to emphasize that the mayor and governor are to blame for creating the migrant crisis by maintaining New York City’s sanctuary status. They should take full responsibility for this situation. Secondly, the $12 billion that this crisis could potentially cost the city could have been put to better use in repairing crucial infrastructure like the BQE or the Williamsburg Bridge. It’s shocking that these structures are still standing. And thirdly, why aren’t the taxpayers being consulted on how their money is spent? Why are we burdened with the consequences of the neglect for our own safety and well-being while supporting those who have contributed nothing to the state? The mayor and governor lack competence and should step down to make way for someone who is truly capable of leading us. Tony Fasano, Staten Island

Even some Democrats are starting to realize that we can’t solve global poverty by bringing it all to New York City. Unfortunately, it seems like this realization has come too late. As the migrants continue to flood the city, we must compare the response of our current political leaders to past leaders in times of crisis. Think back to Governor George Pataki and Mayor Rudy Giuliani during 9/11, and consider their competence in the face of adversity. In stark contrast, Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul seem completely out of their depth. It’s clear that we can’t rely on any help from the White House, which is puzzling for a progressive city like New York. Things are only going to get worse before they get better. John Fleming, Punta Gorda, Fla.
