Attorney for Woman Opposes Reversal of Punitive Damages Verdict

A judge has indicated the possibility of canceling a jury’s $235,900 punitive damages award to a woman who accused Soulja Boy of violent behavior during a party at his Malibu home in 2019. However, the plaintiff’s attorney argues that the verdict should stand.

During a post-trial hearing on June 28, Santa Monica Superior Court Judge Mark H. Epstein expressed concern over the lack of evidence presented by the plaintiff’s attorney regarding the singer’s financial situation. The judge’s clerk noted that without evidence in this regard, the issue should never have gone to the jury. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for July 21.

In response, the rapper’s attorneys claim that the plaintiff’s lawyer failed to provide any documentary evidence of their client’s net worth or current financial situation.

However, in court papers filed on Friday, the plaintiff’s lawyer argues against overturning the punitive damages verdict. They point out that the singer provided crucial evidence during the trial by testifying about his success as a rapper, his earnings from music sales (including a single that sold millions of copies), and his income from social media marketing and YouTube views.

The rapper also informed the jury that he works as a record producer and earns money from the marketing of various products, including a cologne, a hand-held gaming device, a sneaker, a soda product, and certain cannabis products.

The same jury that awarded the punitive damages also ordered the singer to pay $235,900 in compensatory damages to the plaintiff. The majority of this amount is designated for pain and suffering. Since the jury found that the singer’s actions were malicious, oppressive, or fraudulent, a second phase of the trial was initiated to determine if punitive damages should be awarded.

The plaintiff, Kayla Christine Myers, alleged that Soulja Boy held a gun to her head and threatened her life on the night of February 1, 2019. Furthermore, she claimed that the rapper instructed his assistant to tie her up with duct tape and then dragged her by her hair inside the house, forcing her to take showers. Myers spent four hours in the garage before being allowed to leave and was later hospitalized with fractured ribs and a facial contusion.

Soulja Boy has denied the assault allegations, asserting that Myers was the aggressor in the confrontation with his assistant.
