At Least 2 More Murders Implicate BTK Killer as Prime Suspect

Authorities have announced that the infamous BTK serial killer, Dennis Rader, is now considered the “prime suspect” in two unsolved murders—one in Oklahoma and another in Missouri. As part of the investigation, authorities have begun digging near Rader’s former property in Park City, Kansas. The case was re-opened in December after the re-examination of Cynthia Kinney’s 1976 disappearance, a 16-year-old cheerleader from Pawhuska. Undersheriff Gary Upton explains that the investigation has expanded to include other unsolved murders and missing persons cases.

Sheriff Eddie Virden revealed that during the time of Kinney’s disappearance, Rader worked as a regional installer for ADT, which installed new alarms across the street from the laundromat where Kinney was last seen. Although it has not been confirmed if Rader himself installed the systems, his connection to the location has aroused suspicion. Virden decided to investigate further when he discovered that Rader had referenced “bad laundry day” in his writings. Additionally, Rader’s involvement with the Boy Scouts in the area has raised concerns. Upton, the undersheriff, explains that the investigation unfolded from there, leading to a wider examination of other unsolved murders and missing persons cases.

Further investigation has revealed that Rader is also the primary suspect in the murder of Shawna Beth Garber, a 22-year-old woman whose body was discovered in McDonald County, Missouri in December 1990. An autopsy determined that she had been raped, strangled, and restrained with various bindings approximately two months before her body was found. However, her remains were not identified until 2021. Rader, who gave himself the chilling nickname BTK (which stands for “bind, torture and kill”) was active between 1974 and 1991. He was eventually arrested in February 2005 after resuming communications with the police and media, following a period of silence. Authorities have not disclosed the exact number of re-examined missing person and homicide cases, but they believe that Rader could be connected to more. (Read more BTK Killer stories.)
