Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis issued an apology on Saturday for the character letters they wrote in support of their former “That ’70s Show” co-star, Danny Masterson, who was recently sentenced for rape. This apology comes after a judge in Los Angeles handed down a 30-year to life prison sentence for Masterson’s rape of two women in 2003.
In a video shared on Instagram, Kutcher and Kunis expressed regret for any pain their letters may have caused. They clarified that their intention was for the letters to be read by the judge and not to undermine the victims’ testimonies or retraumatize them in any way. They sincerely apologized if their actions had unintended consequences.

Kutcher revealed that Masterson’s family approached them after his conviction in May and asked for character letters that would describe the person they had known for 25 years. These letters were later made public by The Hollywood Reporter and other digital publications.
Masterson had co-starred with Kutcher, Kunis, and Topher Grace in the hit show “That ’70s Show” from 1998 to 2006. However, he was written off the show when the Los Angeles Police Department investigation was revealed in the following year, despite a reunion with Kutcher on the 2016 Netflix comedy “The Ranch.”
During the trial, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo sentenced the now 47-year-old Masterson after hearing statements from the survivors and listening to pleas for fairness from the defense attorneys.
Kutcher, in his letter dated July 27, 2023, described Masterson as a man who treated others “with decency, equality, and generosity.” Similarly, Kunis referred to Masterson as an “outstanding role model and friend” and an “exceptional older brother figure” in her letter to Olmedo.
Both rapes occurred in Masterson’s Hollywood home in 2003, during his peak fame on the Fox network sitcom “That ’70s Show.” The victims testified that they were drugged by Masterson before being violently raped.
In the apology video, Kunis emphasized that their letters were never intended to undermine the victims’ testimonies. She expressed sympathy for anyone who has ever been a victim of sexual assault, abuse, or rape.
