Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Embrace Accountability and Apologize for Masterson Letters

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis issued an apology on Saturday for the character letters they wrote on behalf of fellow That ’70s Show actor Danny Masterson before his sentencing for rape. Masterson was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for raping two women in 2003. In a video posted on Instagram, Kutcher and Kunis expressed remorse for any pain caused by the letters, which were made public on Friday. They clarified that the letters were intended for the judge’s eyes only and were not meant to undermine the testimony of the victims or cause further trauma. The couple stated, “We would never want to do that and we’re sorry if that has taken place.”

Kutcher explained that Masterson’s family approached them after his conviction in May, requesting character letters that described their 25-year relationship. Masterson had co-starred with Kutcher, Kunis, and Topher Grace in That ’70s Show from 1998 to 2006. Kutcher’s letter, dated July 27, 2023, portrayed Masterson as a man who treated others with decency, equality, and generosity. Kunis referred to Masterson as an “outstanding role model and friend” and an “exceptional older brother figure” in her letter.

Kunis emphasized in the apology video that their letters did not intend to undermine the victims’ testimonies or question the validity of the judicial system and jury’s ruling. She expressed sympathy for all victims of sexual assault, sexual abuse, or rape. Both rapes occurred in Masterson’s Hollywood home in 2003, with the victims testifying that he drugged and violently assaulted them.
