As Apple’s business faces uncertainty, Qualcomm shifts focus toward automotive and AI sectors

Qualcomm, a leading technology company that powers most smartphones, has been a pioneer in wireless connectivity since the 1980s. Its patented core technologies have enabled licensing fees for every device that uses its wireless communication solutions, including the latest 5G modems.

While Qualcomm was once the largest fabless chip company, Nvidia recently surpassed it in revenue growth, thanks to the success of its generative artificial intelligence (AI) models like ChatGPT. In response, Qualcomm is positioning itself as a significant player in the AI space. The company has recently introduced new generative AI capabilities for vehicles, expanded into the two-wheeler market, and formed a partnership with Amazon Web Services, a leader in cloud computing.

Traditionally, large language models have relied on extensive cloud-based data to generate text and images. However, Qualcomm’s CEO, Cristiano Amon, believes that there will be a growing demand for local, off-cloud generative AI capabilities in the future. By running these models locally, Qualcomm aims to improve both performance and cost.

Although Apple is one of Qualcomm’s major customers, there are uncertainties surrounding their future relationship. Qualcomm’s modems are currently used in all iPhone models, but Amon has openly stated that they do not have visibility on whether they will be included in future iPhone models.

Despite the potential risks associated with diversification, Qualcomm remains the top provider of modems in Android phones as Apple develops its own silicon technology. The company has played a significant role in the evolution of smartphones since its founding in 1985. Qualcomm introduced Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), which became the foundation for 3G, 4G, and 5G technologies.

In addition to hardware, Qualcomm generates revenue by licensing its extensive portfolio of more than 140,000 patents. However, the company has faced controversy and legal challenges related to these licensing practices. In 2017, Qualcomm faced lawsuits from the Federal Trade Commission and Apple. While these legal battles were eventually settled, they highlight the complexities of balancing licensing and hardware businesses.

Geopolitical tensions and concerns about reliance on Asian chipmakers have also impacted Qualcomm. To address these concerns, chip designers are establishing chip fabs in the US, though labor shortages have caused delays. Qualcomm has pledged to secure nearly half of the capacity at a delayed fab project in Arizona.

Despite challenges, Qualcomm believes its chip business can continue to grow independently of Apple. Apple’s investment in developing its own processors and the export controls on US companies supplying advanced technology to China have affected Qualcomm’s market position. Additionally, the overall smartphone industry is experiencing a downturn, with shipments at their lowest point in a decade.

In response, Qualcomm has shifted its focus away from traditional smartphones and into emerging markets like IoT, automotive, and AI. The company is adapting to industry trends and aiming to maintain its position as a leading technology provider. With its rich history and diverse portfolio, Qualcomm remains a key player in the tech industry.
