Artwork Honoring NHS Staff on Display at Tate Liverpool

Tate Liverpool has presented Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool with a unique group portrait that pays homage to the remarkable achievements of its frontline NHS staff. Commissioned during the Covid-19 pandemic, New York-based artist Aliza Nisenbaum was tasked with creating this extraordinary artwork. The painting, titled “Team Time Storytelling, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Emergency Department, Covid Pandemic, 2020,” will be displayed at the hospital from Thursday onwards.

Originally showcased at the gallery two years ago as part of an exhibition featuring various portraits from the same period, the painting by Aliza Nisenbaum has garnered acclaim for its powerful depiction of NHS frontline workers during the pandemic. Helen Legg, director of Tate Liverpool, expressed the gallery’s pride in having their artwork showcased outside of the traditional art setting, stating that it serves as an acknowledgement of the NHS’s importance as it celebrates its 75th anniversary. Furthermore, it pays tribute to the dedicated individuals who tirelessly care for us.

Nisenbaum’s artwork features a diverse group of staff members, including administrators, nurses, porters, and doctors. Unable to physically reside in Liverpool during the spring of 2020, the artist implemented a unique approach to capture the essence of each individual’s workplace experiences. By asking them to create drawings, Nisenbaum incorporated these sketches into the final image, alongside photographs and Zoom sessions as references for her painting process.

Aliza Nisenbaum is a highly regarded artist, having held solo exhibitions in New York and participated in group installations in South Korea, Los Angeles, and Paris, France. She has also contributed artwork to the London Underground. Louise Shepherd, chief executive of Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, expressed her pride in this valuable reminder of the exceptional dedication displayed by the hospital staff during the recent pandemic. The unveiling of the stunning painting at Alder Hey serves as a testament to the remarkable 20-year partnership between the hospital and Tate Liverpool’s arts for health program. Shepherd looks forward to future collaborative projects that will bring further benefits to the children and young people they serve.
