Arts Organizations in LA County Receive $1.2M in Grant Funding

The County Department of Arts and Culture made a significant announcement on Tuesday, granting a total of $1.2 million to support 40 arts organizations and artists in their recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. Each of the 40 organizations will receive $30,000 through the LA County Performing Arts Recovery Grants. These grants are intended to assist in the creation, documentation, and presentation of both new and existing artistic work, encompassing various art forms such as dance, music, theater, and folk and traditional arts.

Recognizing the ongoing challenges faced by arts organizations in the wake of the pandemic, the department is dedicated to providing much-needed support. Kristin Sakoda, the director of the Department of Arts and Culture, emphasizes the significant role that artists, creative producers, collaborators, and arts organizations play in our society and economy. She expresses that the grant will help stimulate artistic activity and address key needs, such as accessing venues and rehearsal spaces, paying artist fees and living wages, utilizing media and technology, amplifying underrepresented voices, and engaging audiences.

Among the recipients of these grants is A Noise Within, a theater company that will utilize the funds to support a four-week production of “The Bluest Eye,” an adaptation of Toni Morrison’s renowned book. Additionally, Deaf West Theatre will receive assistance in the development of a play based on the short documentary film “Igelnore,” which tells the story of a deaf Jewish child born in Germany during the 1920s. Another artist, Amy Campion, will use the funds to develop her dance performance titled “Street Dance Orixás” at the California African American Museum.

The county’s commitment to supporting the arts and culture sector during these challenging times is commendable. By providing these grants, they are not only promoting artistic expression and creativity, but also helping to sustain the local economy and ensure a vibrant arts community.
