Kac will be sending his holographic poem, titled “Ágora,” into deep space as part of the Deep Space Voyager mission. The artwork, first created in 1986, will be aboard a United Launch Alliance Vulcan Centaur V spacecraft launched by Celestis later this year.
Kac’s persistence and determination have been evident over the years as he sought ways to send his art into space. Celestis, the company behind this mission, is treating it as a tribute to science fiction and the first space time capsule. They plan to launch various items, such as human DNA samples, cremated remains, and “MindFiles” of over 200 individuals. Among the individuals being sent into space are Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, original cast members, and Apollo astronaut Philip Chapman.
Kac’s hologram artwork, Ágora, is a three-dimensional image encoded in microscopic material. The hologram represents the Portuguese word for “a gathering place.” The use of holography allows the image to be propagated to larger sizes, albeit limited by human perception. The artwork will be protected in a titanium case to shield it from radiation during its space journey.
This momentous occasion has deep significance for Kac, as it marks the first time a physical art object will enter permanent orbit in deep space. He views it as a unique piece that combines small and immense elements, creating an aesthetic tension that resonates within the work itself.
