Artist Alleges Beat in Song ‘I Lied’ Was ‘Directly Copied’

Nicki Minaj is facing a copyright infringement lawsuit for her song “I Lied” from 2014, as another musician alleges that she directly copied his beat. The lawsuit was filed by musician Julis Johnson in California, asserting that Minaj and producer Mike Will Made It’s ballad bears a striking resemblance to his song “onmysleeve.”

Johnson claims that his song was published on YouTube in 2011, three years before “I Lied” was included on Minaj’s album “The Pinkprint.”

In the lawsuit, Johnson states that his beat was included on a hard drive that was taken from a studio session without his consent in 2013, when he was attending the Art Institute of Atlanta.

Johnson alleges that individuals associated with Minaj and Mike Will, who also had access to the recording space at the institute, obtained his hard drive.
