Arrested Suspect Linked to Tupac Shakur Murder, deemed Las Vegas’ Historic Mega-case

LAS VEGAS (AP) — In a stunning turn of events, newly released police body camera footage reveals that the man charged with the murder of Tupac Shakur knew the seriousness of his arrest last week near his Las Vegas home.

During the arrest, an officer questions Duane “Keffe D” Davis, asking him what he was charged with. Davis responds, “The biggest case in Las Vegas history,” and proceeds to recount the date of Shakur’s tragic death – “September 7th, 1996.”

According to law enforcement officials, Davis is believed to be the mastermind behind the drive-by shooting that took place on the Las Vegas Strip, claiming the life of the 25-year-old rapper.

Now, over 27 years later, Davis finds himself handcuffed and bound in the backseat of a police car, en route to a county jail, where he is being held without bail.

Despite his circumstances, Davis remains composed and tells the officer, “I’m not worried. I didn’t do anything.”

The recently released police videos, consisting of over an hour of footage, capture Davis’s arrest in his quiet neighborhood at sunrise on September 29th.

The 60-year-old suspect has long been a person of interest in Tupac Shakur’s case. In fact, he openly admitted his involvement in the killing in interviews prior to the release of his memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” in 2019. His arrest came after a police raid on his home two months ago, reigniting curiosity about one of hip-hop’s most enigmatic mysteries.

In the videos, Davis recounts the raid and describes how his arrest that morning was much less dramatic. As they drive to the police headquarters for questioning, Davis questions the officer about why the media wasn’t present during his arrest.

Davis, a self-proclaimed gangster from Compton, California, has not yet entered a plea in the case. His lawyer, Edi Faal, has declined to comment on Davis’s behalf.

During his conversation with the police, Davis mentions that he moved to the Las Vegas area earlier this year due to his wife’s job. However, the audio is redacted when he is asked about his activities after the move.

According to an indictment filed in Clark County District Court, Davis is accused of orchestrating Shakur’s murder and providing the gun to his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, who allegedly carried out the shooting. Anderson, who denied any involvement in the killing, passed away in 1998.

Grand jurors have also decided to add sentencing enhancements for the use of a deadly weapon and alleged gang activity. If convicted, these enhancements could result in a significantly longer sentence for Davis.

In Nevada, a person can be found guilty of murder even if they did not commit the crime themselves but aided another person in carrying it out.

Davis’s first court appearance was cut short when he requested a postponement in order to secure legal representation in Las Vegas. He is scheduled to appear in court again on October 19th.

Authorities believe that Shakur’s murder was a result of a rivalry between West Coast and East Coast factions of the rap genre, commonly referred to as “gangsta rap.” Davis is said to have led a Crips sect in Compton, which clashed with the East Coast Bloods gang associated with Marion “Suge” Knight, the founder of Death Row Records, the label that represented Shakur at the time of his death.
