Arrest Made in Whittier Stabbing Case – MyNewsLA.com

Sheriff’s detectives apprehended a suspect on Sunday in connection with the fatal stabbing of an 84-year-old man in the Whittier area.

According to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau, the suspect was taken into custody at approximately 9 a.m.

The suspect has been charged with burglary and murder, but his name is being withheld pending further investigation. The District Attorney’s Office will review the case for potential filing of charges.

Tips from the public, as well as other law enforcement agencies, along with recovered surveillance footage, enabled investigators to identify the suspect.

The body of Rolland Alexander II was discovered around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday in a residence located in the 15300 block of Goodhue Street, just west of the Whittier city limits in the unincorporated South Whittier area. The suspect allegedly fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle, which was later found in Chino.

Detectives suspect that the same assailant also attacked an elderly man in the 15500 block of Fernview Street in Whittier, a few minutes before the homicide at Alexander’s home. However, the suspect fled when the victim’s son intervened in the assault, according to Sheriff Robert Luna.

During a news conference on Wednesday afternoon, Luna presented security footage showing the suspect entering Alexander’s residence around 2:45 p.m. on Monday.

Shortly after, the suspect drove away in Alexander’s silver Toyota RAV4, which was later found in Chino.

“Based on the surveillance video, we believe the murder took place on August 28 at approximately 2:45 p.m.,” Luna stated.

Luna revealed that security images captured Alexander’s vehicle being driven in Ontario around 3 a.m. on Tuesday and showed it parked in Chino approximately three hours later.

Luna urged anyone with information regarding the case to contact the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tipsters can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
