Arrest Made as Federal Authorities Unearth Human Remains at Residence

A Kentucky man has been taken into custody on firearms charges after federal agents discovered his apartment in Mount Washington adorned with numerous human skulls. James Nott, 39, has allegedly been involved in the sale of human remains on Facebook, with connections to individuals involved in stealing body parts from Harvard Medical School’s morgue. The investigation was prompted by the arrest of Jeremy Pauley, a 40-year-old from Enola, Pennsylvania, who had engaged in conversations with Nott about selling body parts. These conversations were documented in Facebook messages reviewed by FBI investigators. Although the remains found in Nott’s home were not believed to be from the Harvard morgue, he allegedly attempted to sell them to someone connected to the case. Nott had been advertising human remains for sale on Facebook under the name “William Burke,” a reference to a 19th-century Scottish serial killer. During a search of Nott’s apartment, officers discovered firearms, explosives, and AK-47 assault rifles obtained from out of state. Additionally, a variety of human remains, such as skulls, spinal cords, femurs, and hip bones, were found displayed around Nott’s furniture. Nott was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The possibility of further charges related to the trafficking of human remains is still being considered. Nott’s case is being prosecuted, and the attorneys involved have not yet commented on the matter. Last month, federal charges were announced against multiple individuals connected to Cedric Lodge, the former morgue manager at Harvard, who had allegedly agreed to sell stolen human skin to Katrina Maclean for tanning. Jeremy Pauley, one of the individuals charged, addressed the allegations on Facebook, asserting the legality of buying and selling human remains in most states and defending his collection as a way to preserve history and gain knowledge. As the investigation continues, the Lodges, Maclean, and another co-defendant, Joshua Taylor, have pleaded not guilty.
