Arrest Made After Individual Discovers Bag Containing $5K

A Connecticut man discovered a bag containing nearly $5,000 in cash in a parking lot and decided to keep it, feeling as though he had won the lottery. However, he has now been charged with larceny three months later. The bag, which was clearly marked with a bank’s insignia, was found outside the same bank and actually contained cash from the town’s tax department. Trumbull Police stated that there were also various documents inside identifying the rightful owner as the town of Trumbull. The man, Robert Withington, claims that he did not steal the money and did not notice any indication of who the owner was inside the bag.

“It’s not like this was planned out,” Withington stated. “Everything was in the moment and it was like I hit the lottery. That was it.” The money went missing on May 30, and police discovered that an employee in the Trumbull Tax Collector’s office couldn’t find the bag after going to the bank to make a deposit during business hours. Detectives spent several months obtaining search warrants, reviewing surveillance videos, and conducting interviews before learning that the bag had been accidentally dropped outside the bank and picked up by Withington.

“I walked out onto the parking lot, saw something on the ground and there was no one around so I picked it up,” Withington explained. “It’s not like I stole something.” When questioned by police, Withington admitted to being at the bank that day and taking the bag, but believed he had no obligation to return it to the rightful owner. Withington, who has a dog training business and a clean criminal record, has lived in the town for many years and stated that his customers can vouch for his integrity. He has now been charged with third-degree larceny, which is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines.
