Authorities arrested a man armed with a loaded handgun, extra ammunition, and several knives inside a Virginia church on Sunday morning. The arrest came after he made threats of violence on Instagram, along with posting photos of the local church in a release.
Police received a 911 call reporting the threats, prompting a brief manhunt. They initially went to the suspect’s home in Falls Church and then to the Park Valley Church in Haymarket. Although Jiang wasn’t found at his home, a “kill manifesto” was discovered. However, his vehicle was spotted in the church’s parking lot.
The church staff was already aware of a suspicious person who entered the building as the church service began. Pastor Barry White referred to the involvement of an off-duty police officer during Jiang’s entry as a “miracle of God.” The officer and church staff apprehended Jiang near the entrance without incident.
No injuries were reported during the arrest. Jiang was found to be in possession of a firearm, additional ammunition, a folding knife, and a folding “credit card” style knife. He had a concealed weapon permit, and the firearm was not reported stolen.
A search of Jiang’s home revealed the “kill manifesto” that targeted strangers, according to Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis as reported by NBC Washington.
Jiang is facing charges of threats of bodily harm and carrying a dangerous weapon to a place of religious worship. Pastor Barry White expressed his hopes that Jiang receives the necessary help.
