  • She expressed how his accidental overdose has consumed her with grief.
  • Grande and Miller were in a relationship for two years before breaking up in 2018. He passed away later that year.

Ariana Grande openly discussed the untimely demise of Mac Miller, her beloved friend and former boyfriend, in a cover story for Vogue’s August 2019 issue.

In her interview, she shared, “Our relationship was far from perfect, but he was an incredible person who didn’t deserve the battles he fought. I was the anchor for a long time, but I slowly lost my grip. The pieces of us just started drifting apart.”

The “Sweetener” singer and the “Swimming” rapper began dating in 2016 after years of friendship and collaboration. They went their separate ways in May 2018, and four months later, Miller passed away due to an accidental overdose.

In the Vogue profile, Grande described her grief since Miller’s passing as overwhelming. The 26-year-old rapper had publicly struggled with addiction throughout his life, but in his final days, he appeared to be healthy and happy.

Some of Miller’s fans blamed Grande for his relapse after their breakup. She also faced a barrage of hateful comments when he died.

Reflecting on her response to a Twitter user who held her responsible for Miller’s DUI incident in May 2018, Grande shared, “People don’t see the real journey we went through. They didn’t witness the years of effort, fights, and love we poured into our friendship and relationship. So, they have no right to make assumptions.”

According to Vogue’s Rob Haskell, who interviewed Grande, her close friends revealed that during her 2017 tour, she would anxiously keep track of Miller to ensure he stayed on the right path.

Haskell also mentioned that nine minutes into the interview, Grande broke down in tears when asked about her headlining slot at Coachella in 2019. She explained that the music festival reminded her of Miller since she initially attended to support his performances.

Despite the emotional rollercoaster she experienced after Miller’s passing in September, Grande managed to write and record her chart-topping album “Thank U, Next.” She admitted that she barely remembers the process as she was often in a state of intoxication and sadness.
