Are You Guilty of Using Any of These Icons? Britain’s Top 10 Emoji Faux Pas Revealed

Prepare to cringe as musicMagpie, experts in emoji trends, unveils Britain’s top 10 emoji ‘icks’. Whether it’s the classic two-hearts emoji or the cheeky aubergine, emojis have become an integral part of daily communication for many Britons. However, a new report may make emoji enthusiasts think twice. In anticipation of World Emoji Day, musicMagpie has surveyed 2,000 British adults to reveal the most cringe-worthy emojis. Topping the list is the two-hearts emoji, followed by the heart suit, red heart, kissing face, winking face, person with folded hands, smiling face with open mouth and tightly closed eyes, smiling face with hearts, fire, and rolling eyes. Surprisingly, the least cringe-worthy emojis are the party popper, flushed face, and partying face. The research also highlights the importance of good grammar and punctuation in messages, as 24% of Brits find poor language skills off-putting. Emojipedia’s recent study suggests that using emojis in work emails may decrease perceptions of competence, especially if the recipient is unfamiliar with the sender. The report hopes to encourage caution when incorporating emojis into professional communication. It’s worth noting that the 14.0 list of approved emojis includes the ‘pregnant man’ and a gender-neutral ‘pregnant person’, recognizing that pregnancy is possible for some transgender men and non-binary individuals. These emojis may also be used humorously to represent a food baby or a very full stomach after a large meal. The inclusion of these new emojis aligns with efforts to be inclusive and recognize diverse experiences. While some may view these developments with skepticism, it’s clear that emojis continue to play a significant role in modern communication.
