Arcangelo prepares well for Travers Race

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Jena Antonucci, the trainer of Belmont winner Arcangelo, expressed her confidence in the horse’s upcoming race, the Grade I Travers Stakes, following his impressive workout of five furlongs in 1 minute, 1.63 seconds. Reflecting on the change in distance from his previous race, Antonucci humorously acknowledged that it is not common to cut back from 1½ miles to 1¼ miles, but she is pleased with how Arcangelo has thrived and matured during the summer.

Arcangelo’s racing success has made him a standout horse, especially considering that he was acquired for a mere $35,000 in the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by the Blue Rose Farm.

In unfortunate news, it has been reported that Art Collector, an accomplished horse with 11 wins out of 21 starts, had to be euthanized due to a severe case of laminitis. Trainer Bill Mott shared that Art Collector was in good health after a workout on August 5, but then developed a foot abscess that quickly led to laminitis in all four feet. This devastating situation left no choice but to make the heartbreaking decision to euthanize the horse. Art Collector’s racing career included victories in the Alydar Stakes at the Spa, and he was set to compete once more in the Charles Town Classic before retiring for stud duties.

In other news, new horse owners have emerged on the scene. Ride Up, in his ninth race, claimed a victory that caught the attention of trainer Tom Morley and the Flying P. Stable, leading them to claim the 3-year-old horse for $40,000. Similarly, Sippican Shop finished second in the race and was claimed by Beast Mode Racing and trainer Robert Falcone, Jr., also for $40,000. Later in the day, Watasha emerged as the winner, but Winning Move Stable and trainer Linda Rice had to say goodbye, as the horse was claimed by the Three Diamonds Farm and trainer Joe Sharp for the same price. Additionally, Dr. Perry, racing with blinkers for the first time and finishing third in the race, was claimed by Kenneth Ramsey and trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. for $40,000.

Trainer Tom Albertrani has high hopes for Sterling Silver, a New York-bred daughter of Cupid from Sheet Humor. After a successful seven-furlong race in a Saratoga allowance test, Albertrani is aiming for the Grade I Ballerina, where Sterling Silver will compete at the same distance. Winning this race would not only bring recognition but also earn her free nominations, entries, and travel expenses for the prestigious Grade I Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita’s main track on November 4.

Overall, Saratoga Springs continues to be an exciting place for horse racing, with a mix of triumphs, heartaches, and new contenders on the horizon.
