An armed confrontation between Arcadia police and a 21-year-old woman resulted in her being shot and wounded, as she advanced towards an officer with a knife, according to authorities on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Saturday at around 9:09 p.m. on California Street, after the woman’s mother called the police to report her armed daughter. Upon arrival, the woman had initially left the location but returned later, where she began advancing towards the officer, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, who is assisting in the investigation.
Despite being instructed to show her hands, the woman disregarded the commands and proceeded to remove a kitchen knife from her pocket, as reported by the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
She then charged towards the officer with the knife raised above her shoulders, assuming a stabbing position, which led the officer to open fire, according to sheriff’s officials.
The woman sustained a gunshot wound in the upper torso and is currently in stable condition at a local hospital.
Initially, it was mistakenly reported that the woman was shot during a traffic stop.
There were no other reported injuries from the incident.
