A brush fire broke out on Tuesday just west of Perris, scorching approximately 55 acres of land and causing damage to multiple structures. As a result, evacuations were carried out until the fire was eventually extinguished.
The fire was reported around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Juniper and Santa Rosa Mine roads, located between Gavilan Hills and Perris. Various fire departments including the Riverside County Fire Department, Hemet Fire Department, Corona Fire Department, Murrieta Fire & Rescue, and Riverside Fire Department quickly responded to the incident. Despite facing moderate winds, the fire rapidly spread towards the east.
Video footage from the scene revealed that at least two homes were severely damaged and several vehicles were also affected. One outbuilding was completely destroyed.
Cal Fire deployed air tankers and water-dropping helicopters prior to the ground crews’ arrival, successfully slowing down the blaze and securing one side. Reports indicate that at the peak of the incident, six air tankers and four water-dropping helicopters were deployed along with approximately 160 personnel on the ground.
In coordination with sheriff’s deputies, mandatory evacuations were enacted for properties within the boundaries of Blue Sky Road (north), Rocky Hills Road (south), El Baquero Road (west), and Maywood Club Road (east).
By 5:15 p.m., the fire’s forward spread had been halted and it was 5% contained. All aircraft had left the area by 5:50 p.m., and the evacuation orders were expected to be lifted later that night.
A care and reception center for evacuees was set up at Pinacate Middle School, located at 1990 S. A St. in Perris.
As of now, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
