Aug. 22 (UPI) — The Interior Department has announced the approval of its fourth commercial offshore wind project. This project will be located 15 miles southeast of Point Judith, R.I., and will have the capacity to power nearly 250,000 homes.

The Revolution Wind project is expected to create 1,200 local jobs during its construction phase. Once completed, it will generate 703 megawatts of clean energy, according to the Interior Department.

The Revolution Wind project joins the Vineyard Wind project off the coast of Massachusetts, the South Fork Wind project off the coasts of Rhode Island and New York, and the Ocean Wind 1 project off the coast of New Jersey.

“President Biden has set an ambitious goal of achieving 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030 — and I am more confident than ever that we will achieve it,” said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland in a statement. “Working together with industry, labor, and partners from coast to coast, we are creating an entirely new industry along the east and west coasts as well as the Gulf coast.

The Biden administration has stated that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and federal partners are taking an all-of-government approach to collaborate on issues such as ocean co-use and efficient permitting. This is aimed at building a robust offshore wind industry that benefits communities and coexists with other ocean users while minimizing any negative effects.

“Thanks to the Biden-Harris administration’s historic climate and clean energy agenda, companies have quadrupled their investments in U.S. offshore wind to over $20 billion, leading to the creation of thousands of well-paying union jobs,” said Assistant to the President and National Climate Adviser Ali Zaidi.

Biden has set a target of having 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy incorporated into the grid by 2030. Currently, there are only two facilities in commercial operation: Block Island off the coast of Rhode Island and the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Pilot Project.
