Appointment of Special Prosecutor to Investigate Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in Trump Case

A special prosecutor will be appointed to investigate Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, a Republican, regarding his alleged involvement in former President Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the state, as announced by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. The indictment, consisting of 98 pages, accuses Trump and 18 others, including Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, Jenna Ellis, and Sidney Powell, of attempting to manipulate the election results in Trump’s favor.

Trump faces 13 counts on charges such as Solicitation of Violation of Oath by a Public Officer, Conspiracy to Commit Impersonating a Public Officer, Conspiracy to Commit Forgery in the First Degree, Conspiracy to Commit False Statements and Writings, Conspiracy to Commit Filing False Documents, Conspiracy to Commit Forgery in the First Degree, and Filing False Documents.

Although Jones is not named in the indictment, he was one of the 16 fake electors who falsely claimed Trump’s victory in Georgia. They attempted to hold a secret meeting at the State Capitol on December 14, 2020, in an effort to overturn President Biden’s victory. Three of the fake electors have been indicted for forgery, false statements, and impersonating a public officer.

While the lieutenant governor has denied any wrongdoing, stating that he and other electors were merely seeking to protect Trump’s chances in court, he criticizes Willis for using the investigation as a platform for her own political career. Jones argues that she should be focusing on actual criminals instead of pursuing past political vendettas.

Jones was excluded from the indictment after Judge Robert McBurney ordered Willis to remove him from the investigation. This order was prompted by Willis hosting a fundraiser for Democrat Charlie Bailey, who opposed Jones in the 2022 general election. McBurney stated that the conflict of interest would compromise any decisions regarding Jones in connection with the grand jury investigation.

The decision to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Jones will be made once the indictment is finalized. Georgia Prosecuting Attorneys Council Executive Director Pete Skandalakis explains that the council will review the indictment and request the sealed report from the special investigative grand jury. They will also consult with Willis to gather more information about Jones. Although finding a prosecutor willing to handle the case may be challenging due to limited resources and funding, Skandalakis is determined to proceed with the investigation.
