Apple CEO Tim Cook advocates for a “large-scale effort” to combat fake news

What to do about viral 'fake news'

Apple CEO Tim Cook advocates action by the tech industry against the proliferation of “fake news” stories on the internet.

In a rare interview, Cook emphasizes the need for a massive campaign to combat the spread of false information. He asserts that the campaign should cater to every demographic.

Speaking with The Daily Telegraph newspaper, Cook acknowledges the responsibility of technology companies in reducing the circulation of fake news. He suggests the development of tools that can effectively diminish the volume of false information.

Other prominent CEOs in the tech industry, such as Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, have also addressed the issue of fake news. However, Cook’s remarks are known for their frankness.

According to the Telegraph, Cook describes made-up stories and hoaxes as detrimental to people’s mental well-being. He identifies fake news as a significant problem in many parts of the world.

The term “fake news” was originally coined to describe online stories that intentionally deceive readers. These stories are often shared on social networking sites, such as Facebook, to generate profits. In some cases, the stories serve as propaganda for political purposes.

These types of stories gained widespread attention during and after the American election. Fictional stories with titles like “Pope Francis shocks world, endorses Donald Trump for president” attracted millions of clicks.

Distinguishing legitimate news sources from fake ones can be challenging for internet users.

This is where companies like Apple can play a role. In the Telegraph interview, Cook expresses the need for both technological and intellectual solutions. He calls for a modern version of a public-service announcement campaign and emphasizes the importance of media literacy.

Although there are some efforts in schools to teach media literacy with a focus on digital skills, it is not yet a widespread practice.

When asked if Apple would fund a public-service announcement campaign, the company declined to comment on Cook’s interview.

Cook also suggests that tech companies can help address the issue of fake news while respecting freedom of speech and the press.

Apple’s own Apple News app has been praised for providing relatively reliable information. The company reviews publishers who join Apple News, and the app includes a function for users to report fake news or hate speech.

Facebook has recently collaborated with fact-checkers to test “warning labels” for made-up stories.

In the newspaper interview, Cook expresses optimism that the fake news phenomenon is temporary and believes that people ultimately reject it.
