Apologies Issued by School Officials for Targeting Black Students

In an unfortunate incident at Bunnell Elementary School in Flagler County, Florida, school district officials have issued an apology for a misguided assembly that singled out Black students in relation to low test scores. The district officials expressed their deep regret during a news conference, labeling the assembly as a “horrible, horrific mistake” that should never have taken place. As a result, the school’s principal has been placed on paid administrative leave while an investigation takes place.

Cheryl Massaro, the chair of the Flagler School Board, made it clear that segregation is not supported by the board. She emphasized that the incident does not align with the district’s values.

During the assembly, which took place last Friday, Black fourth- and fifth-graders were removed from their regular activities to attend a PowerPoint presentation focusing on low standardized test scores. The presentation, led by two Black teachers, highlighted the underperformance of Black students on standardized tests over the past three years. Additionally, the teachers discussed the correlation between higher grades and the likelihood of attending college, contrasting it with lower grades and the increased chances of encountering negative outcomes such as incarceration or violence, according to parents who spoke to The Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Though no malicious intent was involved, the manner in which the assembly was conducted goes against the district’s principles, as stated by Interim Superintendent Lashakia Moore in a video posted on the district’s website. Moore announced that a community forum will be held in the following week to address the incident.

It is of utmost importance to rectify such incidents and ensure that every student, regardless of their background, is treated with fairness and equity in the education system. The school district officials are taking the necessary steps to investigate and learn from this regrettable incident.
