Apologies Issued by ‘Maestro’ Makeup Artist for Backlash Over Bradley Cooper’s Fake Nose

Renowned makeup artist Kazu Hiro has issued a heartfelt apology in response to the criticism surrounding the prosthetic nose he designed for the upcoming Leonard Bernstein biopic, “Maestro.” Hiro expressed his regret for any hurt feelings caused by the nose, which some online users referred to as “Jewface.” Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, Hiro explained that he aimed to portray Bernstein as authentically as possible and wanted to celebrate his photogenic and genuine appearance. Hiro reiterated his apology when contacted by The Post, showing his remorse for potentially offending anyone.

The film, “Maestro,” tells the courageous love story of the iconic composer of “West Side Story,” Leonard Bernstein, portrayed by Bradley Cooper, who is not of Jewish heritage, and his wife, Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein, portrayed by Carey Mulligan. Bernstein’s children, who attended the film’s premiere at the Venice Film Festival, have publicly supported Cooper’s portrayal of their late father.

Despite receiving a seven-minute standing ovation at the festival, “Maestro” has faced intense scrutiny since the release of its first trailer, primarily due to the exaggerated nose depicted on Bernstein. Cooper, who is also the director of the film, has faced backlash for using a prosthetic nose to portray a Jewish character when he could play the Elephant Man without any prosthetics. Some individuals have compared this choice to blackface or yellowface.

The negative reception continued on social media platforms, with fans pointing out that the prosthetic nose was unnecessary and did not accurately resemble Bernstein’s nose. Some accused Cooper of using this controversy as a ploy to win an Oscar.

However, Bernstein’s children have come forward to support Cooper, expressing their admiration for his dedication to portraying their father and his music. They were moved by his genuine commitment, joy, and love for their father’s work. They stated that their father had a distinctive nose, and Cooper’s decision to enhance the resemblance with makeup was acceptable to them. They believe their father would have felt the same way if he were alive today.

“Maestro” is set to be released on Netflix on December 20, following a short theatrical run.
