Anza Man Accused of Fatally Shooting Father: Trial Proceedings Scheduled

Trial proceedings may commence on Thursday for a 25-year-old man from Anza who stands accused of murdering his father at the victim’s residence.

Anthony David Holguin was apprehended in November 2019 following the alleged killing of David Jose Holguin, 40, in the vicinity of Cary Road and Dusty Road.

Anthony Holguin faces charges of murder, illegal possession of a firearm, as well as firearm and great bodily injury allegations that could result in a longer sentence if convicted.

During a status hearing on Monday at the Southwest Justice Center, Riverside County Superior Court Judge John Monterosso met with the prosecution and defense to discuss scheduling. Both sides agreed to focus on clearing their schedules for pretrial motions by the end of the week.

However, it is uncertain if the attorneys will be ready to proceed with the proceedings. The case had previously been scheduled for jury selection at the Murrieta courthouse, but conflicts in scheduling led Monterosso to postpone the matter until this month.

The defendant is currently held without bail at the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

According to Sgt. Steve Brosche of the Sheriff’s Department, around noon on November 13, 2019, Holguin allegedly confronted his father inside the older man’s residence and, for reasons that are unclear, pulled out a handgun and shot the victim multiple times, resulting in his immediate death.

Witnesses immediately called 911, and deputies swiftly responded to the scene, where they found the defendant nearby and arrested him without incident, added Brosche.

According to court records, Holguin has an unresolved misdemeanor case for allegedly carrying a loaded firearm in public without a permit. He has no prior documented felony convictions in Riverside County.
